So what is security?

Different people all think of different things when they think about security

Secure:
For some, it is just a concept; its about peace of mind and reassurance. It's about knowing that there is something you can rely on, something that you can turn to when there is a problem. Having a feeling of security brings you a sense of confidence and security for the future.

Protect:
For others, security means protection against something or someone. It provides a defence for people and property; safeguarding a precious investment or something that is cherished.

Observe:
Watching over things and watching people is part of the security process. For instance, it can be checking baggage at airports, or watching punters in a casino; it can be monitoring an important industrial process or the corridors of a busy natal care centre. Its about watching or observing things that you value.

Review:
And just in case something goes wrong, the opportunity to go back and look at what happened; to help stop the same thing from happening over and over again. For example, when somebody is attacked, recording the incident can help to establish how to prevent another victim.

Share:
The information that you record can be kept and passed on to others, either in your establishment or to outside agencies, helping them to learn from your experience.

More than just peace of mind

Security brings many benefits apart from peace of mind

Deterrent:
In many cases having a security system installed will act as a deterrent.Simply providing visible surveillance will stop people entering or breaching your protected area. For instance, on petrol forecourts and in high street shops it can significantly reduce casual theft.

Surveillance:
More covert surveillance can be used in areas of high risk to capture information on criminal acts, without making the perpetrator aware that they are even being watched. Covert surveillance of staff in sensitive areas is used to protect money and property in many firms.

Monitoring:
Security systems can also be used to watch equipment, for instance as a process control in an automated factory. Such remote monitoring can be integrated into a central control area, providing cost benefits from better quality control as well as lower manning levels.

Data capture:
Flexible recording and recovery of data is also an important benefit of a suitable security solution. Being able to look back at past data, either to improve your process or to provide vital evidence, can help you to reduce the impact of an incident. The type of data retrieval you require will determine the complexity of the security solution you choose.
